Shielded by the Almighty: Discovering Strength in Psalm 91

Shielded by the Almighty: Discovering Strength in Psalm 91

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1, NKJV).

Psalm 91 is a passage full of promises and blessings for those who trust in God. It is a beautiful reminder that we are never alone and that God always has our backs. Whether we are facing difficult times, feeling overwhelmed, or simply need to be reminded of God’s love and protection, Psalm 91 offers hope and strength.

The Secret Place of the Most High

The first verse tells us that those who dwell in “the secret place of the Most High” will abide under His shadow. What does it mean to dwell in this secret place? It means having an intimate relationship with God – seeking Him daily through prayer, worship, reading His Word, and obeying His commands. When we choose to make God our dwelling place – our refuge – then He promises to protect us from harm.

“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from perilous pestilence.” (Psalm 91:3)

We can trust that even when danger lurks around us or sickness threatens to take hold, God is faithful to protect us.

God’s Shield Over Us

In verse four, it says:

“He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4)

This image describes how God takes care of us like a mother bird protects her young. Even when the storms of life come our way, we can trust that we are covered by God’s love and care. His truth – the promises in His Word- are like a shield and protection against fear and doubt.

No Fear of Night or Day

One of the most comforting parts of Psalm 91 is the reassurance that no matter what time it is or what season we are in, God is always with us:

“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.” (Psalm 91:5-6)

We can rest easy knowing that God never sleeps nor slumbers (Psalm 121:4). He is always watching over us, protecting us from harm, and guiding us through difficult times.

A Thousand May Fall But Not Us

The final verses summarize all these blessings:

“A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord,
who is my refuge,

Eventhe Most High,your dwelling place,
No evil shall befallyou,Nor shall any plague come nearyour dwelling;”
( Psalm 91:7-10)

This passage emphasizes how choosing to abide under God’s protection brings immense benefits into our lives. While others around us may be falling victim to danger or harm, we can trust that God has us covered. We will see the reward of the wicked and prosper in His blessings because we have made Him our refuge.

What Similar Themes of Protection and Strength Can Be Found in Psalm 7?

Psalm 7 beautifully encapsulates the theme of unmasking deception in psalm 7. It highlights the idea of seeking divine protection against false accusers. The psalmist implores God to rise against the wicked, his shield against harm. This profound plea showcases the intertwining concepts of protection and strength, emphasizing the importance of standing firm against deceitful foes.

Safety in God’s Hands

Psalm 91 is a beautiful reminder of how God’s love and protection surrounds us at all times. When we choose to trust Him, abide in His presence, and live according to His Word, then fear has no power over us. We can be assured that God has our backs, and that nothing can harm us as long as we are under His care.

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;I will set him on high, because he has known My name.He shall call upon Me,and I will answer him; I_Will_be_with_him_in_Trouble; I_Will_Deliver_Him_and_Honor_Him.With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation” (Psalm 91:14-16).

The next time you feel overwhelmed by fear or anxiety about the future, hold onto these promises in Psalm 91. Remember that you are shielded by the Almighty – the one who loves you unconditionally and wants nothing but good for your life. Trust in Him with all your heart, knowing that He is faithful to keep His word.
