Parenting with Confidence: A Prayer for Overcoming Insecurity
Understanding Insecurity in Parenting
Parenting is one of the most challenging responsibilities anyone can have. It requires patience, love, sacrifice and above all courage. Every parent wants to give their children the best they can offer. However, it is common for parents to feel overwhelmed or inadequate at times. The feeling that you are not doing enough or that you are doing something wrong can lead to insecurity in parenting. Insecurity in parenting is a real issue that affects many parents worldwide. As a parent you may feel that:“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
- You cannot provide enough for your child
- You do not know how to handle certain situations with your child
- Your child needs more from you than what you can give them emotionally
- You are not reaching out enough or spending quality time with your child
The Effects of Insecurity on Parenting
The effects of insecurity on parenting cannot be overlooked. Insecurity leads to stress which negatively impacts both the physical and emotional health of both parent and child. When a parent feels insecure they may:- Overprotect their children leading them into becoming sheltered and lacking independence.
- Become overly strict resulting in impeding the growth process for their children.
- Become less responsive causing communication breakdowns between themself and their children.
- Become less patient making it difficult for themself to connect with their children emotionally.
- Become overcritical lowering self-esteem in their children who then grow to be insecure themselves.
Overcoming Insecurity in Parenting with Confidence
The good news is that insecurity in parenting does not have to be a permanent issue. By addressing the root causes and making changes accordingly, parents can regain confidence and build healthy relationships with their children. Here are some tips on how to overcome insecurity in parenting:“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:34
1. Focus on your strengths as a parent
Instead of focusing on your weaknesses as a parent, focus on what you’re doing well. Think about the times where you’ve felt confident and proud of yourself as a parent. Make these strengths the foundation upon which you stand. Make sure to ask others for feedback from time-to-time so that you can see where you’re excelling and where there’s room for improvement.2. Educate Yourself
Knowledge is power; no one knows everything there is to know about parenting but everyone could work towards becoming better at it constantly. Whether it’s through reading books or blogs written by other parents or attending training programs available online try and learn something new every day. Remember learning itself is key also make sure that this knowledge translates into practical parenting skills with direct application to everyday life situations found within your family structure.3.Control Your Thoughts
The thoughts running through our minds often influence our emotions leading us either feeling fulfilled or inadequate depending on whether they are positive or negative thoughts respectively. Take control over these negative thoughts by replacing them with positive ones instead- “I am a good mother because….” “I am doing my best…”This change will help boost your confidence levels in parenting.4. Learn to Forgive Yourself
Being a parent isn’t easy, it is important to learn how to forgive yourself from time-to-time for your shortcomings or mistakes. This one of the most important parts of overcoming insecurity in parenting and moving forward with confidence. Forgiveness is hard, but when you forgive yourself, you free yourself from self-doubt and self-judgment and this creates an environment that breeds positive change not only for you as a parent but also within your family structure.A Prayer for Overcoming Insecurity in Parenting
