Let Go of Worry: Embracing Peace in the ESV

The Burden of Worrying

We all worry, from time to time. It’s a natural human response to life’s inevitable challenges and uncertainties. But when worrying becomes a chronic habit, it can take a heavy toll on our physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.

Worrying is like carrying a backpack full of rocks. Every day we add more stones to our burden — fears about the future, regrets about the past, doubts about ourselves or others — until we are weighed down and exhausted. We might try to ignore or suppress our worries, but they still sap our energy and steal our joy.

What can we do? How can we let go of worry and find peace?

The Power of Trusting God

In the ESV Bible, Psalm 55:22 says:

“Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.”

This verse reminds us that God invites us to cast all our cares upon Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). When we surrender our worries to God’s loving care, we experience His sustaining power and presence. Our burdens become light because they are no longer ours alone; they belong to Him who holds all things together (Colossians 1:17).

The Practice of Letting Go

Letting go doesn’t mean ignoring problems or pretending everything is fine. Rather, it means acknowledging that some things are beyond our control and entrusting them into God’s care. It means choosing faith over fear.

To let go of worry requires practice and patience. Here are some practical steps we can take:

  • Identify what worries us and write them down.
  • Ask ourselves: “Is this worry something I can change or control?”
  • If the answer is no, surrender it to God through prayer.
  • If the answer is yes, take action steps to address it, trusting that God will guide and help us.

The Gift of Peace

As we practice letting go of worry and trusting in God’s care, we receive a precious gift: peace. The peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

We may still face difficulties and challenges in life. But with God by our side, we know that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39). We can rest assured that He has good plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11) and will work all things together for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28).

A Prayer for Letting Go of Worry:

Dear Lord,

I come to You today with a heavy heart, burdened by worries too numerous to count.

I confess that I have tried to carry these concerns on my own strength, forgetting that You are the one who sustains me.

Help me to let go of my worries and place them into Your capable hands.

Teach me how to rely on Your wisdom instead of my own understanding.

May your peace flood my heart as I release control over the things beyond my power.

Thank you for being a loving Father who cares about every detail of my life.

In Jesus’ name,
