Holy Pleasure: Embracing Spirituality in Pornography Prayer
What the Bible Says About Pleasure
The Bible speaks frequently of pleasure and its place in our lives. Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 says, “I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.” Similarly, Psalm 16:11 reads, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” These verses demonstrate that God wants us not only to experience pleasure but also to seek it out. But what does this mean for pornography? Can seeking pleasure through pornography be part of a spiritual practice? The Problem with Pornography
Many Christians view pornography as inherently sinful or immoral due to its objectification of people and promotion of unrealistic sexual expectations. In some cases, individuals may struggle with addiction or negative effects on their relationships. However, others argue that pornography itself isn’t inherently sinful but rather how people use it can be problematic. They argue that if used safely and ethically, porn can actually enhance one’s sex life or even improve communication around sex. Regardless of where one falls on this spectrum, it seems clear that many individuals regularly engage with pornographic content. According to one survey from the Barna Group, 68% of Christian men view pornography at least occasionally. Given these statistics, it’s worth considering whether engaging in this activity positively contributes towards spiritual growth or connection with God.Towards Holy Pleasure
In order for porn consumption into spirituality the connotation has been shifted into indulgence which involves getting carried away constantly consuming explicit material may lead towards addiction. The key here might instead be mindful consumption- emphasizing an intentional focus on experiencing a pleasurable sensation and seeking the divine in that sensation. Writer Dr. Mark D. Chamberlain, author of Spirituality & Pornography, suggests this approach: “Recognizing that spirituality has always been allied with pleasure – “In thy presence is fullness of joy,” said the psalmist (Psalm 16:11), and “The kingdom of God is…righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17) – I believe we need to be open to being taught by pornography itself about where women have found for themselves positive accounts of sexual pleasure.” In this way, watching porn could potentially become a spiritual practice aimed at connecting with oneself or one’s partner on a deeper level through mutual pleasure. However, it would also require responsible consumption practices as well as an active engagement with one’s own values and boundaries. What Is the Connection Between Embracing Peace and Embracing Spirituality?
