The Reality of Addiction

Addiction is a serious problem in today’s society. Whether it be drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling or any other substance or behavior that enslaves us, the effects can be devastating. Addiction not only affects the individual but also their loved ones and those around them. Addiction is not just a physical dependence on a substance or activity but also involves emotional and spiritual aspects. It is often born out of pain, trauma and unmet needs in our lives. The initial high provides temporary relief from these issues but soon becomes a vicious cycle where we become dependent on it to cope with life.

The Power of Divine Help

Breaking free from addiction requires more than just willpower and self-discipline; it requires divine help. We were never meant to go through life alone nor overcome addiction by our own strength. God wants to help us overcome our addictions and set us free from bondage. Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. This verse gives hope that with God’s help we can overcome any addiction no matter how strong its grip may seem. God is compassionate towards those who struggle with addiction and desires to heal every aspect of their lives – body, soul, spirit as well as relationships. In Psalm 40:1-3 David writes “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.” This passage beautifully illustrates how God rescues us from the depths of despair when we cry out to Him for help. He not only lifts us out of the pit but also gives us a firm place to stand and fills our hearts with joy and praise. This is the power of divine help.

A Prayer for Overcoming Addictions

Heavenly Father, I come before you today broken, hurting and enslaved by my addiction. I recognize that I cannot overcome it on my own and need your divine help. Please forgive me for turning away from you and relying on substances/behaviors to fill the void in my life. Lord, I ask that you would break the chains of addiction that bind me and set me free from its grip once and for all. Help me to have faith in your power to heal me completely – body, soul, spirit as well as relationships. I pray that you would surround me with people who will support, encourage and hold me accountable on this journey towards freedom. Grant me strength when I am weak, courage when I am afraid and hope when all seems lost. Lord fill the empty spaces in my heart with your love, peace, joy and satisfaction so that I no longer seek fulfillment in things that harm my body or soul. Thank-you Lord for hearing my cries for help. By your grace alone may victory over addiction be mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen
